Bionic Athletes
Ill start by answering the questions, What is the difference between the figure and the body? When I think of a figure I think of the overall shape or form of an object not necessarily a living being. Kind of like just seeing the silhouette of a form. When I think of a body I think of either human or animal and all the individual parts that form the body of the overall being. What is a Cyborg? From what I have come to learn through media is a cyborg is part human, part machine, but I see it closer to a robot (more machine than human). Even though technically someone with a prosthetic limb would be considered a cyborg according to its definition. What is a tool? A tool is anything that helps simplify any action, activity, situation. Why are chair so prevalent in art? A chair can be considered a tool to rest. If you have been standing for a long period of time working on a piece of art, you will want to sit and rest. There is the option of sitting on the ground and maybe using a wall as a backrest or a chair, and the chair will probably be the most comfortable choice to sit and rest. After reading ESPN's Bionic Athlete article, I can see it happening eventually. Even after the reading the arguments for allowing prosthetic, I feel its still a disadvantage for other athletes because they wouldn't have the ability to get a prosthetic and its advantages. They used an example about contacts helping improve eyesight, but anyone can get it without being harmed so I don't see any reason for it being unfair. At the moment if an athlete wanted a prosthetic limb they would have to amputate their real one first. So I believe that when the day comes that anyone can get prosthetic limbs or some sort of substitution without removing anything, is when we will start seeing a change in the rules of sports.
